The Magnificus Killifish (Aphyosemion magnificum) is a vibrant and colorful species from the waters of Cameroon and Nigeria in West Africa. This killifish is known for its dazzling appearance, especially the males, which exhibit a brilliant mix of red, orange, blue, and yellow tones across their bodies. The males’ colorful displays make them a prized specimen for aquarists who enjoy keeping ornamental fish. Females are typically more subdued in color but still attractive in their own right. This species can grow up to 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) in length, with males being slightly larger than females.

In their natural habitat, Magnificus Killifish are found in slow-moving streams, ponds, and temporary pools in tropical lowlands. These habitats are often rich in vegetation, where the killifish use plants for shelter and breeding. Like many killifish, Aphyosemion magnificum has adapted to surviving in ephemeral water bodies by laying eggs that can endure dry periods and hatch once the rains fill the pools again.

For aquarium care, the Magnificus Killifish requires a stable environment. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 liters) is ideal for a small group, although larger tanks are better for more space or if you plan to add other species. The water should have a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, with a temperature range of 75-80°F (24-27°C). They prefer water hardness between 8-15 dGH. Maintaining these water parameters is crucial to keep the fish healthy and vibrant.

Diet-wise, the Magnificus Killifish is carnivorous and thrives on a diet consisting of live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other small aquatic creatures. High-quality pellets and flakes can be offered as supplementary food, but live foods should form the bulk of their diet to support their health and coloration. To minimize aggression, it is best to keep a 1:2 male-to-female ratio in the aquarium. This species is territorial, particularly males during breeding displays, and having more females ensures a more peaceful environment.

Breeding Magnificus Killifish is relatively straightforward. They lay their eggs in fine substrates or plants, and the eggs will hatch in about two to three weeks. With a lifespan of 2-3 years, the Magnificus Killifish provides a rewarding experience for aquarists. Although they are not always available in local pet stores, they can be obtained from specialized breeders or online retailers. With the proper care and attention to water conditions, diet, and breeding practices, these striking fish will thrive in your aquarium.
